The Welcome Wreck: Housing and Residence Life

Posted 29 days ago  in Parent and Family NewsFirst Year Families.

Hello Yellow Jacket Families!

We hope you enjoy this video in our Welcome Wreck: Georgia Tech 101 series, featuring Housing and Residence Life with Jenny Cotton, Executive Director.

In this video, Jenny helps us understand how best to prepare for the move-in experience, tips and tricks for the day, and the importance of the roommate agreement*.  Her presentation slides are attached at the bottom of this post.

This is the second of three Welcome Wreck videos offered by Housing and Residence Life, and we encourage you to watch them all, ideally in chronological order.

Move-In Dates and Process:

Dates: New residents (incoming first-years, transfers, and new grads) will move in on August 9-10, 2025.

Sign-Up: Students need to sign up for a move-in appointment. Time-tickets for selecting move-in appointments will be available starting July 14 via My Housing.

Check-In: There will be a drive-thru check-in. Follow the provided directions and do not go directly to your residence hall.

RA Floor Meetings: After moving in, students will meet with their Resident Assistant (RA) for a floor meeting to discuss important details, including how to submit a facilities request and roommate agreements. Discussion for the roommate agreements revolve around temperature of the room, cleanliness, what items can be shared vs. what is off limits, guest policy, quiet hours, etc.

Week of Welcome:

Occurring the week before classes, Week of Welcome helps students develop a network of campus connections, resources awareness, and time to transition to college life. This week also serves as the official kick-off to the First-Year Wellness Experience with is a year-long program that builds the foundation for life-long success across the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.

Items to Bring/Prohibited Items: Refer to this list for guidance on what to bring and what to leave at home.

Yellow Jacket Family Hive: Engage with the Yellow Jacket Family Hive for updates and information.

Social Media: Follow @gatechhousing on social media for the latest happenings within the halls.

Enjoy watching and re-watching as much as you like, hopefully with your student!
