The 2024 Welcome Wreck: Georgia Tech 101 - Week of Welcome and Move-In Goodbyes

Posted over 1 year ago  in First Year FamiliesYellow Jacket Family 101 (2024).

Hello Yellow Jacket Families!

We hope you enjoy this video in our Welcome Wreck 101 Summer Series, featuring Rob Crutchfield and Brett Hulst from Housing and Residence Life, and Carly Bloomingdale from Student and Campus Event Centers, discussing Week of Welcome and Move-In Goodbyes.

There's a recap of the primary messages at the end of this post. In addition, attached to this post please find an interactive map to help guide you around Atlanta as you get your student settled, and instructions on how your student needs to fill out the waiver form.

Enjoy listening and re-listening as much as you like, hopefully with your student as well.

Add your comments or questions here in this post. You'll open up conversations with other families, and Parent and Family Programs will get back to you with answers and support.

Go Jackets!

New Student Move-In

New Student Move-In is Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11, 2024. Students will need to sign up for an appointment for a specific time to move into their residence halls. We ask that you stick to your move-in time to help with traffic flow on campus.

When you get to campus, you will go to the CRC Parking Deck — not your residence hall assignment. Start at the CRC to check in while still in your car. They will direct you to your residence hall once you’ve checked in there.

At your residence hall’s unloading zone, you will unload your vehicle into the provided large bins. The driver of the car will then move their car to the parking location nearest your residence hall. Shuttles will help bring your driver back to your residence hall.

Week of Welcome

Week of Welcome (Aug 12-18) is a time for students to get connected to other new Yellow Jackets, to the Georgia Tech Campus, and to the City of Atlanta. Students will have more than 250 events that that they can choose to attend to learn more about different student organizations that they may want to join, departments and on-campus resources that they may want to utilize, and just have a fun time meeting new people before classes get started.

The schedule for Week of Welcome is hosted on the Georgia Tech-branded Guidebook app — the same one used for FASET and Family Weekend. You can download the app and the Week of Welcome Guide here: https://builder.guidebook.com/g/weekofwelcome2024/ While there is a browser view of the schedule that you can scan, the mobile version on the app is going to be the better way to see the information. The app will have Move-In resources, hours of operation of offices, dining, and services that week, and all Week of Welcome events for students.

Many events will require students to RSVP. RSVPs will open 24 hours before an event. We ask that students remove the event from their schedule if they change their mind about attending. This will allow another student to RSVP and attend.

Also, in the Week of Welcome Guide, each student will need to fill out the waiver section found at the top of the left-hand side panel. Students will need to fill out the form that applies to them based on their age as of Monday, August 12. If they are 17 or under, they will need to share their guardian’s name and email address, and the Week of Welcome team will send their guardian a waiver to sign for them in DocuSign. Unfortunately, that is not an automatic send once their name and email address are entered in the form. We will send those daily leading up to and during Week of Welcome.

For events that are considered high-risk, meaning physically active events like dancing, fitness classes, or events with inflatable attractions, students will need to show their “Form Submitted” screen to show that they completed the waiver. We recommend that students take a screen shot of that screen and their QR code with their name on it in case it’s needed for attendance-taking at their events.

Our hope is that families encourage their student to really dive into Week of Welcome by attending a variety of events, meeting new people, and getting familiar with their new Georgia Tech home for a few years. Please create times to check in with your student to ask them about the events they attended and to encourage them to try something new that week.
