The 2024 Welcome Wreck: Georgia Tech 101 - Campus Recreation Center

Posted almost 2 years ago  in First Year FamiliesYellow Jacket Family 101 (2024).

Hello Yellow Jacket Families!

We hope you enjoy this video in our Welcome Wreck: Georgia Tech 101 Summer Series, featuring: Brian Smith Senior Director, Campus Recreation.

In this video, Brian helps us understand the myriad options available to students within the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) and other programs and services offered by Campus Recreation.

Programs and Services:

Competitive Sports – This grouping includes both Intramural Sports and Club Sports. As mentioned in the video, Intramural Sports are offerings that happen weekly but you can participate in as many as you like once the pass fee is paid. Club Sports meet anywhere from 2-4 times a week for practice and then typically have games or tournaments on weekends. Each team typically has a coach and a dues structure to help with operations. You can meet all the club sports during Week of Welcome at Rec Fest. Both options are available to all students.

Fitness – We offer Group Exercise classes, Instructional Classes (Sports and Martial Arts), Personal Training, Massage Therapy and more. A group exercise pass goes for $49 and allows students to participate in as many classes as they would like. The other courses vary regarding their fee structure. We also have a 15,000 square foot fitness floor available for use by all students. The earlier in the day you come the more likely you will not have to wait in line for equipment.

Outdoor Adventure – We offer 9 sports in our Outdoor program. On any given weekend, we will send 3-5 trips out into the field. These trips take place throughout the southeast where our guides have done extensive research for the best routes to take and provide the greatest experience possible. We provide the equipment you just need to sign up. We also offer open enrollment excursions throughout the United States which usually last between 8-10 days. These are also lead by our guides who have done extensive research in the location but we typically have a rotation of places we go annually. Finally, the Leadership Challenge Course is a great place for team building and to develop leadership skills. This is best for groups larger than 10 so we can set up a program to meet your needs.

Aquatics – We have the competition pool from the 1996 Olympics in our building. We offer open lap swim in the competition pool and our leisure pool. The leisure pool also contains a Slide and spa to have some fun and relaxation. We also offer scuba classes and learn to swim programs as part of Aquatics. We provide all of the equipment for scuba. Lastly, if you need to re-certify as a lifeguard or get certified to become a lifeguard, we also offer classes for that.

CRC – Our facility is 300,000 square feet and contains 6 basketball courts, 3 fitness studios, an auxiliary gym, climbing wall, 15,000 ft2 fitness floor, 3 racquetball courts, a squash court, 2 pools, and a dive well. There is something for everything in our building so come check us out.

Employment – We hire over 300 students annually to work with Campus Recreation. These positions include facility staff, aquatic staff, officials, rock wall staff, reception staff, summer camp staff, and Leadership Challenge Course staff. Our rates start at $12 an hour. Our scheduling is extremely flexible, our staff has a great time, and we like to develop the soft skills in our employees so they are ready for the next opportunity.

Parents, if you are interested in coming for a workout or to shoot some hoops while visiting your student, they can sponsor you into the gym for $15 and then you can join in the fun.

Come join us at Rec Fest during Week of Welcome to see what we are all about!
