Move-Out is Around the Corner
It is hard to believe that it's already April and move-out is just around the corner! Housing and Residence Life shares important details about the move-out process with residents through email and My Housing, but you can help make sure your student understands a few critical things.
We have re-established our best practices of thorough inspection and optimized key management. This means that your resident should anticipate an inspection with their RA in either early April (for those in apartments) or during finals week (for those in traditional halls). They should also plan to hand their key to a staff member when they leave, at which point all of their belongings should be removed from their assignment.
Residents should be aware of their deadline to check out. This is the last possible time they can turn in their key without incurring a late fee. For most students, the deadline is 24 hours after their last final or noon on Friday, May 3 at the latest. Those graduating will have until noon on Sunday, May 5. If your student needs an extension, they can request one through My Housing under the checkout deadline module. Please note that if they are approved to stay, there is a $50 fee assessed for each additional night.
Georgia Tech is conducting numerous infrastructure projects around campus that will impact student move-out. Parking will be extremely limited around the residence halls and residents should be fully packed and ready to load out before their pick-up.
Your students can also make their move-out easier by taking advantage of summer storage services. Several companies provide boxes or storage pods for students to fill with their belongings that the company stores over the summer. In the fall, the boxes are delivered to your student’s new address. Learn more about these services here.
The process for move-out is more than just inspection and fees. Your student will receive information about borrowing bins, cleaning checklists, storage options, donating items they no longer need, and more beginning in April and continuing for the rest of the semester. You can find more on the move-out page or by visiting the Housing Help Desk.
